LRT Vertical Alignment & Alignment Optimization
Client: Rheinbahn AG
Rheinbahn AG operates the Düsseldorf tram and Light Rail systems, which include 20 lines with the overall length of approx. 150 km. The tram line 712 shall be upgraded to become the feeder to the new constructed underground LRT line “Wehrhahnlinie”. For this purpose the existing track alignment has to be verified.
Based on the existing documentation by Rheinbahn AG (horizontal alignment and gradient surveys) Rail&Bus Consultants finalized the vertical alignment design documentation for the complete line.
After this step alignment optimization measures in regard to track geometry and gradients were developed. The scope of the investigation included detailed design for the complete line of 7 km length.
The specific challenge of the project was the identification of the numerous con-straint points. The design constraints were very complex due to the re-construction of all stations along the line, leading to changes in their vertical location, and also due to many intersections with other traffic.
In particular Rail&Bus Consultants performed the following services:
- Reconstruction of the complete design documentation (vertical alignment) on basis of the existing plans & site surveys
- Development of optimization measures in regard horizontal & vertical alignment and track geometry
- Dynamic envelope analysis (CAD 400) and verification of the vehicle loading gauge to existing structures.
